Christchurch
WebSecure is a fairly distributed company, all but one staff member are set up to work from home at least some of the time. It could fairly be said voice over IP and VPN’s have been very good to us.
Some will know I live and work much of the time in my home town of Christchurch in New Zealand, which at 4:36am on Saturday morning suffered a substantial earthquake measuring 7.1 on the richter scale. The destruction is large and I know of brand new houses whose concrete slab foundations have been snapped as if they were water crackers and the houses will be lost.
As I write this, just after midday New Zealand time on Monday, there are still many people without power and sewage and my wife has spent the morning boiling, bottling and ferrying water to workers in the city who are outside in the sun. I could go on about the state of things, but am sure the press cover it better than I.
It is a time to remember that people matter more than things; that the man with the most toys doesn’t win anything in life worth having. And to thank those of you who have enquired to our well being. We are well, as are all our families and friends. Our house has also survived unscathed.
