Real World Encryption
The story so far…
It’s July 12th 2007. A U.S. helicopter gunship kills 12 unarmed people in a Baghdad square. Two Reuters news staff are killed, photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and his assistant and driver Saeed Chmagh, 40, bringing it to the world’s attention.
The whole incident had been video taped from the helicopter and is shown to Reuters editors in Baghdad on July 25, 2007 in an off-the-record briefing. That same day Reuters applies under the freedom of information act for a copy of the video.
It is never released.
A U.S. military assessment of the incident concludes that the attack was justified and met all rules of engagement.
Reuters Statement on the issue.
April 5th 2010, the site Wikileaks posts a the entire Video, showing the death of the unarmed journalists.
But here’s the kicker…
The video was ENCRYPTED. There are no specific details about how Wikileaks managed to decrypt it, or even what kind of encryption it was. Wikileaks had months earlier sent out a twitter asking for CPU power style help, so I assume it wasn’t a trivial task.
… wish I had shares in a military strength video encryption company - I smell a big sale coming up.
