Microsoft attempt to sue Waledac out of existence

This is great news for tired spam fighters everywhere. I don’t know whether this is a first, but Microsoft managed to get a Federal Judge in Virginia to issue a takedown of 227 .com domains because they were used by the bot-net Waledac. The immediate consequences should be felt by all of us as it removes the domain controllers from visibility of their clients.

The longer term implications, that a company can apply to have your domain shutdown in you’re absence, remain a little more cloudy. Let’s hope that doesn’t get abused because this might force a change in the way bot-nets are built and perhaps lead to more use of IP addresses that can quickly be blacklisted.

Microsoft legal cheerleading
CNET on Waledac tackdown

CNET article has a nice graphic showing inflection points over a 24 hours period, whilst the Microsoft one has a bit of cheer leading:
“At Microsoft, we don’t accept the idea that botnets are a fact of life”

Edit: The graphic is actually for an 18 days period and is taken from the Microsoft research. Perhaps CNET quoted it wrong.
