Ninemsn serve up malware

Link
‘The web site, which is jointly owned by the PBL Media and Microsoft, intermittently features a compromised in-house banner advertisement for the 75th anniversary of “Women’s Weekly” magazine’

This seems basically the same as what happened to the New York Times last year (multiple times), the malicious content coming through a third party supplier of an advertisement. In that respect it isn’t new. However, these incidents raise serious questions about what people can trust on the internet. For quite some time what we might call conventional wisdom has suggested that if you keep to mainstream, trusted sites and don’t browse to the internet fringes trying to download stolen movies, music or pornography and the like you will be basically safe. I think it’s fair to say that was good advice that has served many people well.

What is highlighted is a growing trend where sites that everyday folk would say are ‘trusted’ become exploited, if only for a short period of time. Ninenmsn is both a reputable site and large trustworthy business. Apparently they can’t keep malware off their own site, and users can no longer be certain their site is clean and can be trusted.

It’s a worrying trend.
