John's favourite iPhone Apps
Whoo Hoo! — By popular demand of me, here they are:
My top 3 useful iPhone apps (in no particular order) are:
- Camera genius
The iPhone camera comes with no manual options such as shutter, aperture or ISO adjustment. The next best way to get clear photos at times when lighting isn’t optimal is to utilise the iPhone’s accelerometer and take the photos when the phone is held still. There are other features such as zoom (I don’t see the point in non-optical zoom), timer (would be useful if I could screw the phone to my mini tripod), sound capture (uses noise to trigger the photo) and big button which is the only other option that interests me, allowing anywhere on the screen to be touched to trigger a photo.
- Shazam
Very little bothers me more than hearing either hearing a song when out and about and not knowing who the artist is or hearing it on the radio and not being able to remember the artist’s name. This was a problem that had plagued me for many many years…but no more. Shazam now allows me to detect the song and collate a list of interesting new music that I can purchase at a later time. Brilliant! There are a number of other funky features such as linking to YouTube clips, iTunes store and biography and discography information.
- Foxtel Guide
This app brings together the two technologies that have most impacted on my life in recent years, the iPhone and my Foxtel IQ. The search feature is what I use most and where this app really becomes useful is it’s ability to either alert you 15 mins before the specified show starts or actually set the IQ device at home to record it! Just make sure you have enough free space on your IQ device first ;).
Other notable apps:
-WildWest pinball (who doesn’t love pinball…on a phone)
-Beanhunter (when it is coffee time)
-TouchTerm (for the nerd in me)
